78 goals in two nights: Champions League matchday 2 breaks the scoring record
PSG won at the Etihad, Real Madrid needed a 90th-minute winner in Rome and Liverpool scored six in Austria. Here is everything that mattered from a record-breaking round.

The second round of the league phase produced 78 goals across 18 matches — a record for a single Champions League matchday. Three games produced seven goals or more, and only two of the 18 ended with fewer than two.
PSG win the heavyweight clash in Manchester
The headline result came at the Etihad, where Paris Saint-Germain beat Manchester City 4–2. PSG were three goals up inside 32 minutes through Désiré Doué, Ousmane Dembélé and Vitinha. Erling Haaland scored twice after the break, but Maghnes Akliouche's goal in between kept City at arm's length. It leaves City 17th on three points — a jarring contrast with their perfect domestic start.
Late drama in Rome and Milan
Real Madrid won 4–3 at Roma. Donyell Malen's double put the hosts 3–1 up early in the second half, before Madrid scored three times in the last eight minutes, Antonio Rüdiger scoring the winner in the 90th. Inter suffered a similar fate at home: Club Brugge's Tresoldi completed a hat-trick and Vermant added a fourth as the Belgians won 4–3 at San Siro, despite two goals from Lautaro Martínez. Inter, Porto and Napoli are still without a point.
English clubs: three wins, two defeats
- Liverpool won 6–3 at LASK, with Barcola scoring a hat-trick from three shots on target.
- Aston Villa thrashed Fenerbahçe 6–0, Jackson and Barkley both scoring twice.
- Arsenal beat Lille 3–0 with three goals in seven second-half minutes from Timber, Eze and Saka.
- Manchester United lost 2–0 at Atlético Madrid, conceding inside the first minute.
- Manchester City lost 4–2 at home to PSG.
Shocks elsewhere
Norway provided two of the stories of the night. Bodø/Glimt beat Borussia Dortmund 1–0, and Viking FK drew 3–3 with Bayern Munich. Viking led 2–0 before two Harry Kane goals and one from Luis Díaz turned the game around — then Haugen equalised in the 90th minute.
